Content Design for NextSelf
TL;DR
Problem: Need to develop an overall voice and tone for a new brand, and make the onboarding flow more enticing.
Solution: Define a voice that’s empathetic and encouraging. Weave newly defined voice into all onboarding screens and microcopy.
How I helped: I developed a clear voice for product copy that both defines this new brand and encourages people to take part in the app.
Organization and role
NextSelf is a self-improvement app empowering people to lead their most fulfilling lives. The product gently pushes users to become a better version of themselves through content, practical exercises and guided reflection.
Project
I worked with NextSelf’s CEO to understand the product and intended brand voice. I then reworked and wrote new copy for every screen in the onboarding flow as well as in-app exercises and guided reflections.
Problem
When I was brought on to the NextSelf project, the team was still building the app and finalizing designs. They needed someone who focused on UX writing to craft personal, empathetic and encouraging content, while still keeping an eye on the details.
Approach
NextSelf offers up practical programs for all types people who want to improve their lives. While the team did not have a voice and tone guide, their goals were clear. The CEO shared with me his vision for the app and the way he thought NextSelf should sound. We both also had the mutual goal of crafting content that would draw new users into the app and keep them engaged. I first spent time reviewing current brand assets and further defining the voice and tone. I then identified all UX copy on the onboarding screens, and rewrote or reworked everything for consistency and style.
Outcome
Here are some final mock-ups of NextSelf onboarding screens using content I wrote.
Results
As of summer 2021, the app is still in its development stage and will soon launch.
The CEO had this to say about my work, “Kelsey produced amazing work for my team! Her work helped us deliver our UX with the right tone, precision, and trustworthiness - extremely important for a personal development experience. Highly recommend working with Kelsey!"
