Content Design for Qatalog

TL;DR

  • Problem: Need for a complete scan and edit of copy throughout the Qatalog work hub.

  • Solution: Create a cohesive voice for product copy and use a wholistic approach to edit and refine copy.

  • How I helped: I focused first on consistency. I then looked for opportunities to further guide people through an ideal journey. Finally, I infused Qatalog’s friendly voice into longer segments of copy.

Organization and role

Qatalog is a digital work hub connecting people, teams and SaaS tools. I joined Qatalog as their only freelance UX writer in February 2021.

Project

I worked with Qatalog’s marketing team to create a cohesive voice for the product copy. I also edited, simplified, optimized and wrote content for screens throughout the work hub. This included everything from button verbiage and error messages to a full onboarding flow.

Problem

When I joined Qatalog, they were still in their beta phase. The team had built the brand and created a beautiful, highly functional product, but they hadn’t focused on the UX writing. They needed somebody to take a wholistic look at every single piece of copy, define a product voice with room to evolve, and adjust copy where needed.

Approach

Qatalog brings order to chaos. People should be able to login and intuitively get to work. Since the product was already easy to use, the copy needed to be a seamless addition – not a distraction. I focused first on proper grammar (of course!) and consistency. I then looked for opportunities to further guide people through an ideal journey. Finally, I infused Qatalog’s friendly voice into longer segments of copy.

Outcome

I created UX copy edit documents like the one shown below for every section and screen of the product.

Qatalog is a product people use constantly and rely on to get their work done, so a lot of the content just needed to be out of the way. Here is an example of a workflow I refined.

Qatalog’s voice is friendly and plainspoken. Words are used to educate users in blank states and help them accomplish their work in other areas. Here is an example of content I wrote to educate and encourage users.

 Results

The Qatalog team had a final say on copy and the majority of my edits were put into production during Qatalog’s beta period. We also continued working together as new features were added to the product.
